When astrologers assess a relationship, present or potential, the signs and interactions between several planets in the birth charts are taken into account. Even when Sun Signs are harmonious, difficulty may come through having traditionally incompatible Moon Signs. With understanding, those difficulties can be overcome.
Most people know their Sun Sign and wonder if it is compatible with their partner’s or which sign would be best for them. The Sun Sign shows self expression, creativity and indicates the Soul Purpose. It is the underlying energy, coloring the other planets and ascendant in the birth chart. But once a relationship ‘comes home’ and a couple starts living together, the Moon Sign becomes equally important. The Moon reflects sunlight and shows the immediate response to events and environment. Ruler of both mother and inner child, it governs the experience of nurturing, nesting and emotional security. The sign of the Moon shows specific needs involving these areas as well as how a person reacts when upset.
The Moon moves quickly through the zodiac, completing a full cycle in roughly 28 days. During that time it goes through the four phases: New, First Quarter, Full, Last Quarter. These cycles can also be called: beginning, building, completion, then releasing into a new beginning. Twice a year, the Moon is eclipsed when the earth comes between it and the Sun during a Full Moon cycle. This special completion cycle brings an ending and reveals a new pathway. The Moon is in both a sign and a phase in the birth chart.
A short overview of the Moon in the Signs:
Moon in Aries: Impatient, restless, quick to anger, quick to recover.
Moon in Taurus: Steady, physical, uses sensory experience to assuage anger.

Traditional astrology says Moons in compatible elements work best for living together (earth and water, fire and air) but that’s not always what pairs up. Find someone else or learn how to harmonize? Try these pointers for living with an incompatible Moon Sign. First, realize the lunar response is unconscious and don’t expect it to change. Instead, think of how each sign can dance with the other by sharing feelings in a non-threatening way; anticipating and allowing the partner’s response. For example, Moon in Gemini and Moon in Scorpio have very different ways of dealing with stress. The more Gemini talks, the more upset Scorpio becomes, the more negative the reaction. Instead, Scorpio can say, “I’m sorry. I just need some time alone to think.” Gemini can call a friend. Gemini could release the need to know what Scorpio is feeling, understanding that Scorpio may not know themselves.
Another example: Taurus Moon stands silently during Sagittarius’ philosophical tirade but won’t surrender their position. Sag would do better with caressing Taurus and expressing needs gently. Taurus learns that saying "I understand what you are saying" will restore their partner's good humor.
