If previous experiences represent a present karmic state then the birth chart symbolises that point of karma reached at birth.
But not only must it represent the karma of the individual at birth, the horoscope will also indicate the beginning or starting point of the present karmic potential: the potential to rectify past mistakes and overcome frustrations which should lead to a better person and also the opportunity to enjoy the rewards brought forward from previous creditable attributes.
Looking at a chart in this light (first as a ‘whole’ and not just for certain karmic points) and exalted planets or planets which are in dignity and in good aspect should signify areas or characteristics of harmony and fulfilment as a result of past spiritual growth. The areas of tension in the chart – the squares and oppositions and planets which may be in their detriment or fall – might suggest possible areas where conscious effort is necessary in order to surpass the probable tensions and difficulties as they may present throughout life.
Not only, therefore, is the birth chart representing the potential to benefit in this life but it also offers a challenge – to overcome the results of past karma to lead hopefully to even richer benefits in the next karmic existence.
The planets can be assessed as the driving influences, depending on their situation in a chart and the aspects between them will depict how these drives operate through the personality.
Whereas the Sun represents the ego, will and basic direction in life, the Moon represents the soul: the emotions and subconscious responses – these responses are the result of deep memories relating to the past including childhood and past life experiences. Therefore aspects between the luminaries will show the possible harmony or tension between the ‘self’ and the ‘soul’.
Mercury will give indication of the ways in which the mind accepts and carries out its purpose, its ‘quest’ or ‘search’ through life. For instance, in a ninth house placement it will show the need to learn through philosophy, religion, further education or travel whilst in the sixth house, there may be a need to acquire special mental skills to put towards career affairs. Mercury in the eighth house will direct the mind towards occult interests and spiritual searching.
Venus will bring attention to materialistic needs; perhaps through the challenge to overcome selfishness or greed, or, in a more spiritual direction, through the appreciation of art, music and creativity.
Mars, the planet of action suggests how the individual directs himself e.g. placidly, calmly, energetically, impulsively, explosively! Obviously the latter two pose the challenges of needing to restrain over-enthusiasm or a heated temper!
Jupiter will indicate levels of tolerance; the general outlook on life – broad or narrow-minded, religious, philosophical, optimistic or pessimistic.
A well aspected Saturn can represent areas of gain and benefit as a result of past hard work or on the other hand this planet of Karma may present the challenge of the need to overcome certain obstacles or frustrations throughout the life trends.
Overall through the Ascendant will be seen the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’: the intended result which, through the potential of the birth chart is hoped to be realised. The lessons of each sign correspond basically with their key words: Aries – I am; Taurus – I have; Gemini – I think; Cancer – I feel; Leo – I will; Virgo – I analyse; Libra – I balance; Scorpio – I desire; Sagittarius – I perceive; Capricorn – I use; Aquarius – I know and Pisces – I believe.
