Meditation for Beginners

Jun 4, 2006 Elizabeth Bissette

A review of Stephanie Clements' wonderful book, "Meditation for Beginners".

We tend to view meditation as something complicated, difficult, if not impossible. If we've read about it at all, we've more than likely read about mysterious-sounding things, Chakras, Yoga, Zen. We quickly discover these names refer not simply to a method but to an entire system of teaching.

If we press on and continue within these systems, we can often find ourselves frustrated, confused. It is difficult, we think. People in the West, who are most often not taught meditation as a usual part of life, as those in the East are, have a hard time simply shutting off their thoughts. The idea of doing that without then falling asleep is almost inconceivable to us more often than not.

Stephanie Clement, PhD, has written a book that can help us with all of this. Whether you've tried to meditate, but have had an impossible time doing so, are a total beginner or even if you have achieved some success with the practice, Meditation for Beginners will serve as an excellent guide for you. In it, Dr. Clement presents meditation in a bevy of fresh, practical lights.

She shows us how meditation can become part of our everyday lives. So Astrology can, and as we see in the Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, the two can even be combined. With this guide, we can learn to concentrate, relax, tap into our capacity for healing and self-knowledge, get rid of bad habits, in short, change our lives. This book is a wonderful, easily readable, practical guide to living a better, healthier more focused life.
