Numerology and Holistic Numbers

The Power and Significance of Birthdays

Sep 19, 2009 Carol Rzadkiewicz

Everyone has a holistic number, and by discovering theirs people can not only achieve a greater sense of self-awareness but also develop their full personal potential.

Numerology, the belief that numbers possess sacred powers, dates back to between 9000 and 7500 B.C. and originated in Mesopotamian, Judaic, and Greek civilizations. In the Old Testament, for example, not only letters but also numbers represent hidden meanings in messages, dreams, and even a person's name. (Crawford & Sullivan)

People still believe in numerology today; and even many expert mathematicians maintain that numbers possess sacred powers. After all, the deeper science has probed into the wonders of the universe, the more aware scientists have become of the mathematical nature of the cosmos. Numbers, in fact, are responsible for the precision that is evident in the complex behavior of the universe.

The Dual Nature of Numbers

According to Saffi Crawford and Geraldine Sullivan, authors of The Power of Birthdays, Stars, and Numbers, “Numbers possess a dual nature and can represent either a positive or negative force.”

Moreover, they maintain that by exploring the meaning of numbers, people can discover and develop their personal potential. The first step, however, is for people to discover their holistic number.

The Importance of Holistic Numbers

A holistic number is the sum total of the numbers of a person’s birth day, birth month, and birth year; and determining this number, with its positive and negative characteristics, will allow people to recognize their particular challenges in life and, as a result, be better equipped to deal with them.

In addition, by understanding their holistic number, people will be capable of achieving a greater level of self-awareness.

How to Calculate a Holistic Number

It’s quite simple to calculate someone’s holistic number. Simply take the person’s birth day, birth month, and birth year then add all the digits together; however, continue adding the numbers until a single digit remains, for example:

  • Birthday: July, 15, 1985 = 7 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 36 = 3 + 6 = 9 (9 is this person’s holistic number)
  • Birthday: January 20, 1952 = 1 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 2 = 20 = 2 + 0 = 2 (2 is this person’s holistic number)

The Nine Basic Numbers of Numerology

According to Crawford and Sullivan, there are nine basic numbers and each number can play either a positive or negative role in someone’s personality based upon how that person faces his or her particular challenges in life.

  • Ones are dynamic and receptive. Positive attributes are self-assurance, creativity, singularity, and independence. Negative attributes include intolerance, indecisiveness, arrogance, overconfidence, and a tendency for dictatorial behavior.
  • Twos are sensory-oriented. Positive attributes are sociability, receptivity, and ability to balance one’s own needs with those of others. Negative attributes include susceptibility to flattery, inability to stand up for oneself, and a propensity for martyrdom or subservience.
  • Threes are expressive and emotional. Positive attributes include creativity, imagination, sociability, enthusiasm, and versatility. Negative attributes include indecisiveness, jealousy, denial, and a tendency to manipulate situations.
  • Fours are physical. Positive attributes include practicality, organizational skills, honesty, directness, and self-discipline. Negative attributes include being emotionally undemonstrative and domineering, and a predisposition for strictness, stubbornness, and rigidity.
  • Fives are instinctive. Positive attributes include ingenuity, decisiveness, versatility, broadmindedness, and efficiency. Negative attributes include restlessness, impatience, inconsistency, and impetuousness.
  • Sixes are emotional and often extremist. Positive attributes include idealism, creativity, humanitarianism, compassion, and vision. Negative attributes include perfectionism, snobbishness, a propensity for being critical, and a tendency to interfere or act in a domineering manner.
  • Sevens are intuitive and rational. Positive attributes include honesty, trustworthiness, assertiveness, methodology, ingenuity, and discrimination in taste. Negative attributes include insecurity, skepticism, detachment, secretiveness, and being overly sensitive.
  • Eights are demonstrative and commanding. Positive attributes include strength of convictions, motivation, determination, authoritativeness, and soundness of judgment. Negative attributes include impatience, intolerance, extreme frugality, and a propensity for being power hungry and domineering.
  • Nines are accommodating and individualistic. Positive attributes include compassion, tolerance, patience, integrity, sensitivity, generosity, idealism, and humanitarianism. Negative attributes include impracticality, nervousness, stubbornness, and a tendency to be easily led my others, suffer from feelings of inferiority, worry excessively, and become emotionally frustrated.

The important thing to remember, as stated earlier, is that people face challenges in their lives and these challenges are what determine whether the positive or negative attributes of their holistic numbers play dominant role in their personalities. If people keep this important point in mind, they will then be able to achieve a greater level of self-awareness and, ultimately, develop their personal potential to its fullest.
